Bingo Ann Leaves Job on a Big Bingo Note!
October 1, 2008 · Tagged: Bingo
Ann Copley has worked in the land based bingo industry for 44 years and she has done a multitude of different bingo related jobs throughout her career, but at the age of 62 Ann decided it was time to retire and she ended her job on a bingo high note by turning her hand to bingo caller for the night by calling out the numbers on the Whizz Kids charity game her Mecca Bingo Club in Exeter.
Mecca Bingo held a special event for Ann at their club on Saturday night to wish her farewell and this was the very first and last time that she took to the main stage as a bingo caller. Ann has worked in many departments of her local bingo hall throughout the years which used to be called the Top Rank social club before Mecca Bingo took over as she has gone from selling bingo tickets, to working in the catering department and then ending her time by working as their club controller and looking after personnel issues and staff wages.
Ann had this to say about her retirement form the bingo world, “I was very nervous and the microphone was a bit shaky as a result but it was great fun. It’s quite scary, though, standing up there in front of all those people but I did really enjoy it. I called the numbers the old-fashioned way and used old bingo phrases like 88, two fat ladies, and legs 11, which had people laughing.”
“We used to be so busy when I first started that we had to shut the doors and people would be left outside,” she said. “Because the hall was always so busy it justified a department solely for ice-cream. Now bingo halls don’t get half the amount of people they used to. I’ve made so many friends during my time at the club and I have some favourite customers who have been playing here for many years. I will miss the club but I’m looking forward to retiring and spending time with my family.”
Although Ann has been in the bingo industry for many years she has not played bingo herself for more than 15 years and you never know now she is retired she may even go back to playing the game.
