It always makes me think really hard when I hear stories such as these. I mean, how on earth can a game like bingo which is a completely innocuous and fun entertainment experience, become a source for problem gambling? Ah but there is the rub, it is not actually bingo that is the problem, it is the fruit machines that are placed in bingo halls, these seem to be the problem causers.

Susanne Orton a sixty three year old convincing assistant stole from her own husband, who is a senior partner at Harold G Walker in Bournemouth. She was spending as much as ₤500 a night in her local bingo club, playing the night away on the fruit machines. I also have to ask myself, are the people employed in bingo clubs not trained enough in the ways of recognizing gambling problems? They are supposed to be, but then again we are all ultimately responsible for our own actions!

That being said, Mrs. Orton, not satisfied with having gambled away ₤100 000 of her families savings, turned to stealing from the law firm in order to indulge her compulsion with the slots machines, and stole another ₤80 000. No I can understand losing this amount of money in one of the high flying exclusive casino clubs in London, but in a bingo hall in Bournemouth? How ever did she get away with it?

Needless to say, she was moving clients money around from the law firm to her account and playing the fruit machines five nights a week, apparently to relieve the stress of working long hours in the law firm, and she was eventually caught out and sentenced to 10 months in prison. It hardly seems worth it to me!
