HMRC to Appeal Against Mecca Bingo VAT Rebate

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs is to appeal against the decision made in May allowing Mecca Bingo ₤36.3 million in overpaid VAT. This decision was taken by the EU VAT Tribunal, but I can’t say that I am surprised that the Government is appealing against the decision. Even at the time it happened I expected this would occur. And so apparently were Mecca Bingo as they did say that they did not expect any benefit to their company from this decision during 2008.
Help for UK Land Based Bingo Operations?

Well the petition to “save my bingo” didn’t pull off the VAT thing for UK land based bingo operations, but it does seem as though something is about to happen to assist them in their plight to make better profits and increase attendance at clubs.

Gerry Sutcliff, for those who do not know; the Sports Minister, has commented that the new Gambling Act of 2005, now supports advertisements promoting bingo and other gambling, and will allow gaming adverts to appear on television.
