Well it is finally official, the Gala bingo Caller of the Year competition has been and gone and there is a winner. Not my favorite by a long chalk, but then I had nefarious desires for the only female in the competition to win. It is sad really that the National Bongo Competition has been cancelled, so I suppose that as far as bingo calling goes, we are going to have to make do with the Gala Competition. The finals for this bingo calling competition took place on Sunday 29th June 2008. Aaaaand the winner is Michael Edwards!!
Are Bingo Halls Going to be Turned Into Mini Casinos?

There have been some concerns expressed regarding the new ruling that is going to allow bingo halls to increase the amount of ₤500 jackpot slot machines back into their hallowed halls. These mainly stem around the fact that there are fears that bingo clubs will be turned into mini casinos. I hardly believe this can be true, I mean the, the amount of machines they are going to be allowed is only to double, and that is not from ten to twenty, it is from four to eight. Eight high paying slots can hardly constitute being a mini casino, can it?

Finally we have a decision from the UK Government regarding slot machines in bingo halls. They have handed a much needed lifeline to the industry in a complete U-turn on the amount of ₤500 jackpot slots allowed in bingo halls. Heaven knows there has been enough lobbying for this to take place. I don’t know if you remember, but in March Gerry Sutcliffe announced to the Bingo Association that something was going to be done, and this has been along time coming. Last September the amount was reduced to a total of four high paying jackpot machines with a stake of ₤1 each. As the industry was already staggering from the effects of VAT and the new non-smoking laws, this seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back for many bingo clubs.
